De l'expression.

Essai sur la 1ère Recherche Logique

Claudio Majolino

On expression. An Essay on Husserl's First Logical Investigation

This book pursues a twofold purpose:
(1) presenting the first attempt to reconstruct Husserl’s early theory of expression within the context of the semiotic debate of his time, it provides not only an unusual introduction to the 1st Logical investigation but also a valuable historical outline of the different theories of signs—philosophical, psychological and mathematical—of the end of the 19th century;
(2) having singled out the specificity of Husserl’s position, it uncovers the critical potential of the Husserlian semiotics in its critique of the century-long dogma according to which “sign” is an univocal term whose essence can be captured by the medieval formula aliquid stat pro aliquo. On the basis of a previous detailed study of his 1891 manuscript Semiotics. On the logic of signs, Husserl’s notion of expression in the Logical Investigations is presented and contrasted with Brentano’s distinction between authentic and inauthentic presentations (eigentliche/uneigentliche Vorstellungen), Anton Marty’s theory of the twofold mode of reference of signs and his theory of linguistic form (Sprachform), Eduard Martinak’s and Richard Gätschenberger’s semiotics, and Meinong’s understanding of the relation between signs and assumptions (Annahme).
