L’année 2008 est le centenaire de la naissance de cet immense philosophe qu’est W. van O. Quine. La meilleure manière de lui rendre hommage est certainement de prendre au sérieux sa doctrine et ses thèses, et de les discuter. Dans Lecture de Quine, F. Rivenc entreprend de relire l’ouvrage central de Quine, Word and Object. Chaque chapitre de cet ouvrage fait ainsi l’objet d’une présentation critique, distribuée en deux parties : une libre exposition de l’essentiel de son développement, une discussion de certains thèmes privilégiés pour leur importance ou leur fragilité. C’est un fait que la philosophie analytique des cinquante dernières années n’a pas toujours suivi le chemin de Quine, en particulier son « négativisme logique » : ce fait est à considérer sérieusement.
Lecture de Quine ne prétend pas être une « somme » sur Quine, mais plutôt un appel à faire œuvre d’esprit critique.

The book is the best tribute that can be done for the work of Willard
Quine. Indeed the book not only presents the main points of the work of
Quine with rigour and care, but it is also highly critical. The same kind of
critics and respect that Quine had in relation to Carnap.
The discussion of the work of Quine has been centred on Word an Object
and this was an excellent choice since it is probably the most
systematic of Quine’s
books and at the same time it is where Quine shows himself in his more
radical form.
The critical analysis, where exposition and critics are carefully
distinguished is fine and deep and, different to many other expositions
the aauthor does not understand
the task as a merely historical presentation. Two of the most
interesting points of the book are the discussion of Quine theses on
analytic sentences in relation to the
interchanges with Carnap and the discussion of Quine’s critics to the
development of non-classical logics.
